How Often Should You Pressure Wash Your Pittsburgh Home?
Pittsburgh's weather is hard on the outside of your home. Hot, humid summers encourage algae and mildew. Wet springs keep surfaces damp. Winter road salt migrates from the street to your driveway and walkways. All of that adds up to a house that can look years older than it is — and surfaces that quietly degrade underneath the grime.
So how often should you actually schedule a pressure wash?
The general rule: every 1–2 years
For most Pittsburgh homes, a thorough exterior wash every one to two years keeps siding, concrete, and wood looking good and functioning properly. That said, several factors push the timeline shorter.
Signs it's time to wash sooner
Green or black streaks on siding. That discoloration is algae or mold. It spreads, and in Pittsburgh's humidity, it can come back in a single season if you skip a year.
Driveways and walkways that look gray or black. Concrete is porous. Oil drips, road dust, and organic material work their way in. The longer they sit, the harder they are to fully remove.
A deck that looks dull or fuzzy. Wood fibers open up when exposed to moisture and UV. A cleaning before you re-stain or re-seal makes a significant difference in how well the finish holds.
Before painting or staining. This one is non-negotiable. Painting over dirty siding traps contaminants under the paint and shortens the life of the job substantially.
What to watch by season
- Spring — Best time to wash off winter road salt and early algae growth before it sets in.
- Late summer / fall — Good time to clean before leaves sit on surfaces through winter.
- After major storms — High winds deposit debris and can embed dirt into siding.
Don't wait until it's obvious
By the time you can clearly see the grime from the street, it's been there a while. A quick look at your siding from close range, or at the grout lines in your concrete, will usually tell you more than a drive-by glance.
